본 논문은 1920-30년대 근대 한국의 자수를 통해 서구 근대 가부장제 미학의 ‘순수 예술(fine art)’ 개념과 그에 기반한 미적 평가 틀이 현실을 살아가는 다양한 개인들의 미적, 예술적 경험을 얼마나 설득력 있게 해명하고 추동하는지를 탐구한다. 근대 한국 자수는 포스트식민(한국), 하위 장르(공예), 여성주의의 관점에서 대안적 미학 패러다임의 필요성을 보여주는 중요한 사례라고 할 수 있다. 바느질과 자수는 가부장제의 긴 역사 속에서 다양한 위치의 여성들에게 부과되었던 행위라는 점에서 다층적인 성차 관점에서 검토되어야 한다. 페미니즘 미학을 논의하기 위해 여성 예술을 단일한 범주로 보편화하는 시도는 부적절하며 이론적, 실천적인 오류에 직면하게 된다. 본 논문은 공예와 예술을 넘어서 페미니즘 관점에서 ‘예술’ 개념을 변경하고 새로운 평가 기준을 제공하는 대안적 미학 패러다임을 모의하기 위한 첫 번째 단계로서 ‘한국’, ‘여성’, ‘공예’, ‘예술’ 각 개념에 대한 비판적 분석에 초점을 맞춘다. 이 분석에서 핵심적으로 비판의 대상이 되는 것은 미적 순수성과 디자인의 독창성, 개인의 자율적 예술 의지, 미적 의미의 고정성이다.
Abstract
In this essay I want to look at some exemplary moment in the history of the concept of fine art before suggesting the positive form in the feminist perspective in my subsequent essay. I suspect how convincing explanation about the concrete aesthetic and artistic experiences the western modernism and patriarchal aesthetics provide. I focus on Korean modern embroidery between 1920 and 1940. Korean modern embroidery is a crucial example to show the necessity of the alternative aesthetic paradigm of post-colonialism(Korea)/sub-genre(craft)/gender politics(feminism). It is inappropriate to generalize the women's art in the perspective of the universal feminism and will make bad effect for the feminist movement. The needlework and embroidery should be researched in the various orders of gender differences. I mainly concern about each concept of ‘Korea’, ‘women’, ‘craft’, and ‘fine art’ by destructing the basic values supporting the western modernism and patriarchal aesthetics; ‘aesthetic purity’, ‘uniqueness of design’ and ‘art will of the isolated artist’, etc.
