본 연구는 17세기 네덜란드 여성 알레이다 흐레버의 생애를 고찰하여 그녀가 예술의 창작과 작품의 수집 및 예술애호가들과의 교류를 실천하며 당대 유럽의 문화계에 남긴 흔적을 복구하고자 한다. 흐레버는 자신의 집을 여성의 집이라는 의미의 프라우엔하위스로 명명하고 동료 여성들과의 교류 및 연대의공간으로 활용했다. 프라우엔하위스는 동시에 미술작품을 수집하고 전시하는 공간이기도 했다. 흐레버의 예술 활동은 여성적 우정이라 부를 만한 독특한 정신적 동기를 기반으로 하기에 남성 위주의 지배적예술 담론과는 구별될 만한 성취와 사유를 낳았다. 이 연구에서는 흐레버의 전기적 사실들을 바탕으로여성적 우정이 흐레버의 예술 활동을 어떤 방식으로 견인했는지 살펴본다. 흐레버의 예술 활동은 또한여성적 연대라는 관념이 근대 이전 여성들의 예술 활동에 엄연히 존재했고 이들의 관계망 안에서 예술과 문화적 교류가 활발했으며 서로에 대한 사회적 책임감이 당대의 시대성을 구성하는 한 부분이었음을입증한다. 여성들의 우정은 예술 활동에 자발성, 포용성, 개방성과 같은 태도를 결부시켰으며, 이는 전근대 시기 남성 중심적 서구문화 안에서 그 독보적 가치를 발휘했다.
Abstract
This study seeks to examine the life of the 17th-century Dutch woman Aleida Greve, with a focus on her engagement in artistic creation, art collection, and interactions with art lovers. The aim is to recover her contributions to the cultural landscape of contemporary Europe. Greve designated her residence as a “Vrouwenhuis,” a term signifying a women’s home, which she utilized as a space for collaboration and solidarity among her fellow women. This Vrouwenhuis simultaneously served as a venue for art collection and exhibition. Greve’s artistic pursuits were driven by a unique sense of feminine friendship, distinct from the prevailing male-dominated artistic discourse of her time, resulting in significant accomplishments and intellectual contributions. Drawing from the biographical facts of Greve’s life, this research investigates how feminine solidarity influenced her artistic endeavors. It also highlights that the concept of female solidarity was a prevalent element in the artistic activities of pre-modern women and their extensive networks, demonstrating the active cultural and artistic exchanges within their social responsibility, which played a pivotal role in shaping the zeitgeist of their era. Women’s camaraderie was associated with attitudes of spontaneity, inclusivity, and openness, showcasing their distinctive value within a predominantly male-centric Western culture of the pre-modern era.
