Abstract
This paper aims to analyze, from perspectives of reconciliation and healing, Joshua Oppenheimer’s films “The Act of Killing” and “The Look of Silence” which deal with the Indonesian Genocide of 1965~1966. Furthermore, based on findings from the analysis, the paper intends to compare the two films with and discuss Muel O’s “Jiseul: The Unfinished Years II,” a movie about the tragic Jeju April 3 Incidence. The author accordingly examines the possibility of social healing through genocide films. Before the film analysis, this paper starts from the proposition that trauma is an impediment to imagination, expression and language. It also begins with the premise that films serve a means of healing which can contribute to overcoming the impediment to expression. In his “The Act of Killing”, Joshua Oppenheimer inspires murderers to make a film by challenging them to reenact their killings. “The Act of Killing” represents the genocide explicitly through the murderers’ participation in the film-making process. At the same time, the murderers introspect about the film they have made and disclose the trauma they have experienced as perpetrators. On the contrary, “The Look of Silence” tells the story of Adi, a member of a victim family, who tries to trace the truth by interviewing his brother’s killers about his death. However, the killers respond with silence, irresponsible behavior, disapproval, denial, avoidance, justification, excuses or even naked threats. The film “Jiseul” breaks down the structure of confrontation between perpetrators and victims by conceptualizing the ideas of redemption and healing. The film which features the scenes of performing memorial rites attempts to comfort victims and heal survivors’ broken hearts. All of the three films pursue social healing with a focus on the pain of perpetrators and victims as human beings, rather than the structural violence at a national level.
