Abstract
Wei Te-sheng’s Seediq Bale is indisputably one of the best movies that not only turned out to be a box office hit but also received international critical acclaims for its depiction of Taiwanese aborigines under the Japanese colonial rule. This movie adaptation of the anti-Japanese uprising of the Seediq tribe called the Wushe incident greatly enthused the Taiwanese audience of the 21st century. Many previous studies have insisted on seeing this movie as an allegory of the strained China-Taiwan relationship, in which the Taiwanese audience obviously read the current threat of China in the ruthless, colonial rule of the Japanese empire, identifying with the indigenous rebels. This article is premised on the idea that these previous studies tend to underestimate the significance of the other perspectives of minoritarian groups within the tribal society, such as female and acculturated aborigines, by means of paying too much attention to the masculine heroism foregrounded in the movie. In this regard, this paper maintains that if it eulogizes the bravery of the anti-Japanese male aborigines, the movie at the same time undercuts the male heroism through its self-conscious employment of critical perspectives on the uprising that, for instance, hold the rebels for their brutal massacre of Japanese women and children. The conclusion of this paper is that Seediq Bale is such a heteroglossic text as cannot easily be translated as a handy resource of Taiwanese cultural nationalism of the twenty-first century.
