일본통치시기 타이완 프로영화운동의 맹아 연구 -사회주의 영화저널리즘, 타이베이시네마리그, 그리고 중국영화의 관람성 고찰-

Abstract

This paper discusses the inception of proletarian film movement in Taiwan under Japanese Occupation. Between the 1920s and the 1930s, the socialist film movement, which criticized the imperialistic and colonial capitalism prevalent in the cinematic spheres of East Asian countries and advocated the emancipation of the proletariat, fiercely developed. Yet to this date, the academia has hardly discussed the development of the socialist movement in Taiwan during the same period. In Taiwan, there was no similar proletarian artistic associations such as Japan’s NAPF and colonial Korea’s KAPF. Subsequently, it was difficult for a proletarian film movement to burgeon in Taiwan. In addition, in comparison with colonial Korea, Taiwan’s own film market was situated in a relatively dire condition. A film production industry and journalism that could exhibit an inclination to reflect the reality of a colony and advocate nationalism was not able to thrive. However, this paper argues that, regardless of such limitations, Taiwanese and Japanese progressive intelligentsia based in Taiwan to an extent attempted a proletarian revolution as well as criticism towards the reality of being a colony by utilizing films. This paper unearths and examines first-hand news articles and film criticism and explore the possibility of constructing a historiography of proletarian film movement in colonial Taiwan.
