A Study on Music in Plays Published in Modern Children’s Magazines- Focusing on Eorin-i, Sinsonyeon, Byeolnara, and Aisaenghwal

본 연구는 근대 아동극 장르에서 활용된 음악의 실제를 고찰하는 목적을 둔다. 이를 위해 필자는 『어린이』와 『신소년』, 『별나라』, 『아이생활』로 대표되는 근대 아동잡지에 수록된 극 중 음악을 분석하여 다양한 극의 종류에 따른 음악적 실연 형태와 동요 관련 작가들의 작품 등을 고찰하였다. 『어린이』 창간호에 첫 아동극이 발표될 때부터 ‘적절한 음악의 사용과 창작이 요구’되었고, 극의 형태와 의도에 따라 기존에 알려진 노래 선율이나 새로 출판된 동요 등이 구체적으로 소개되었다. 음악은 극의 분위기를 암시하거나 조성하고, 메시지 전달에 효과적으로 사용되었다. 춤/유희나 합창으로 어우러져 공감대를 형성하고 집단 연대를 이루거나 때론 선전·선동의 도구가 되었다. 예를 들어 천사나 선녀 등 천상의 소리를 표현하거나 계급주의 성향의 극에서는 계급을 구분하는 상징으로 노래가 사용되었다. 그리고 기독교회를 배경으로 발간된 『아이생활』에는 극음악뿐 아니라 가장 많은 음악 관련 자료들을 찾아볼 수 있었다. 때론 극을 위한 해당 음악이 작곡되었고, 여러 편의 성극과 성탄 주제의 극들에 찬송가 및 동요의 구체적인 선율들이 제시되었다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine practical applications of music in early modern Korean’s children’s plays published in early modern children's magazines such as Eolin-I(Children), Sinsonyeon (New Youth), Byeolnala(Star Country), and Aisaenghwal(Child’s Life). Various types of plays, the works of children’s song writers, the form of performances, and the existence of sheet music were identified in these texts for analysis. From the very first issue of Eolin-I, the use and creation of appropriate music were emphasized in children’s plays, and depending on the form and intention of the play, previously known song melodies or newly published nursery rhymes were specifically introduced. Music was used effectively to convey a message, suggesting or creating the atmosphere of the play. Music was harmonized with a dance or chorus to form consensus, group solidarity, and sometimes became a tool for propaganda and agitation. In Aisaenghwal specific music was composed for the play. and specific melodies of hymns and children’s songs were presented in several sacred plays and Christmas-themed plays.
