Abstract
This paper examines how the video art of media artist Bill Viola constructs temporality, perception, and existence through a philosophical lens. While traditional audiovisual media have primarily functioned to represent reality and construct linear narratives, video art—particularly since the mid-20th century—has opened up a distinct aesthetic field by deconstructing causal sequences and emphasizing non-linear temporality. Based on the time philosophies of Gilles Deleuze and Henri Bergson—especially Deleuze’s concepts of the crystal-image and interval, and Bergson’s ideas of duration and virtuality—this study analyzes how video art functions not merely as a representational device but as an affective and ontological medium for philosophical reflection. Bill Viola’s works are central to this exploration. Through technical devices such as slow motion, repetition, stillness, and real-time editing, his videos render perceptual intensity and emotional emergence not as completed expressions but as unfolding processes. This temporality highlights the tension and emergence that occur in the in-between, rather than presenting fully realized moments or linear developments. Viola’s manipulation of time invites the viewer to experience sensation and thought as intertwined processes. Furthermore, this paper explores how the actor’s performance functions within video art. In Viola’s work, performers often exhibit restrained, minimal gestures, yet when combined with the video medium’s temporal manipulations, these performances gain a powerful and heightened affective presence. This demonstrates how performance can transcend traditional theatrical representation to become a philosophical and aesthetic expression of human embodiment, temporality, and emotion. In conclusion, Bill Viola’s video art exemplifies how video as a medium can serve as a space for philosophical inquiry, merging technology, the body, sensation, and thought. His work offers a significant case for understanding the expanded role of performance and media in contemporary aesthetic practice.
