탈식민주의이론으로 바라보는 사역과 직제― 저항, 모방, 그리고 사도적 계승(Apostolic Succession)에 대한 비판적 고찰

초록

초대교회에서의 사도들은 예수 그리스도와의 관계성 속에서 위임된 권위를 가졌고 조직화 이전 교회의 정신적, 영적 지도자로 사역했다. 그들이 가졌던 권위의 근거는 예수 그리스도의 삶이었으며 그것은 저항과 영적 차별성으로 나타났다. 그런데 사도적 계승은 교회정치제도의 세속화와 함께 감독에 의한 계승으로 나아갔고 점차 계급화되어 군주적 감독제로, 더 나아가 교황제도로 발전해 간다. 탈식민주의에서 사용하는 모방 혹은 흉내(mimicry)의 개념은 이러한 변화의 과정, 즉 하나님나라 운동에서 조직화된 기관으로의 교회의 이행과정을 설명하는 유의미한 틀이 된다. 애초 저항과 대안의 공동체였던 교회가 사회정치적 환경에 따라 세속적 권력을 모방하게 된 것이고 이는 사도적 계승의 본래적 정신과 의미를 왜곡했다. 이러한 현상은 바실리카(Basilica)와 고딕(Gothic)으로 대변되는 기독교건축양식과 예배와 성찬의 신비화를 통해 그 증거를 찾을 수 있다. 즉 위계와 질서가 교회생활 전반에서 구체적으로 나타난 것이다. 이렇듯 탈식민주의적 연구를 통해 교회직제의 변화과정을 추적하며 세속적인 권력에 대한 모방과 왜곡, 절대화와 사유화의 흔적을 발견할 수 있다. 교회는 회개, 반전, 화해, 그리고 평등을 소망하고 삶속에서 구체적으로 구현했던 본래적 의미에서의 사역과 직제의 모습을 회복해야 할 것이다.

Abstract

In early Christianity, apostles were those who succeeded the ministry of Jesus and were the spiritual foundation for the community of faith at that time. The origin of their authority was established not through power, but their status as witnesses of Jesus. This was expressed through their unique life style which demonstrated their resistance against worldly powers. However, secularization of the church strengthened the power of the bishops who were regarded as the apostolic successors. This also resulted in the monarchical episcopate and furthermore, the pope system in the Middle Ages. The writer uses terms such as mimicry as a means of explaining the process of change in the church ministry and order from early Christianity to the early Middle Ages. The original meaning of ministry was distorted and the church shifted from charismatic movement to institution. In the area of church architecture, Christianity adopted Basilica and Gothic styles to express power and dignity of the church. The church also made Mass, especially Holy communion as highly mystical to emphasize the distinctiveness of priests. Hierarchical ethos was widely prevailed in the church. Through the study of Post-colonialism, one can easily find mimicry of worldly values and distortion of the true meaning of ministry and order in the church. The church needs to recover not the form, but the spirit of the ministry and Apostolic succession which advocated resistance, reconciliation, peace, justice, and equality through the ministry and order.
