초록

사도에 관한 초기 교회의 기록들은 형성기 기독교의 다양성을 보여준다. 사도들은 각기 다른 신학적 이해와 목적을 가지고 서로 경쟁하거나 갈등하기도 하였다. 바울과 누가의 문헌들은 이러한 초기 기독교의 역사적 정황을 잘 드러낸다. 사도는 초기 교회가 지속적으로 경험한 리더십이었다. 사도직이 예수의 직계 제자들에게만 국한되지 않았듯이, 그것은 1세대 크리스천들만의 경험이 아니었다. 기독교의 1세대가 지나면서 사도와 사도직에 관한 신학적 이해는 변화하였다. 에베소서는 과거 세대의 사도와 에베소서 당시의 사도를 구별한다. 전자는 교회의 기초가 되는 사도로서 그리스도의 비밀을 받아 공개한 지도자들이다. 반면, 에베소서 당시의 사도들은 선대가 전한 그 비밀에 기초하여 그리스도의 몸을 세우는 책무를 수행한다. 그들은 특별한 계시의 통로가 아니라 이미 계시된 비밀을 증거하고 실천하기 위해 교회의 다른 리더십과 수평적으로 협력할 위치에 있다. 이러한 점에서 사도에 관한 이해는 역사적 변화를 겪었다. 본 연구는 초기 교회의 사도를 사도의 자격, 사도직의 평가 그리고 사도와 교회와의 관계를 중심으로 고찰한다.

Abstract

This article discusses early church’s apostles in terms of apostle’s qualification, ethical theological criteria of apostolate and the relationship of apostle and the church. Early Christians experienced apostles beyond the group of twelve, that is, Jesus’ immediate disciples. The early church saw conflicts as well as cooperation among apostles with different views and agenda. Paul’s epistles reflect such occasions. Apostles were not limited to the first generation of the church. Later believers, such as the author of Ephesians, viewed early apostles as the foundation of church; they received the foundational revelation of Christ’s mystery (Eph 3:5). Meanwhile, later apostles were to prepare believers for ministry and to work for the ecclesial edification (Eph 4:12). They were no longer channels of new revelations but ware supposed to work on the basis of early apostles. In this sense, there is difference in meaning and significance between apostles of the first and the later generations.
