Abstract

The two-related phenomena of modern technology and fast-paced change create a need for well developed thinking skills. Especially, young people growing up in the twenty-first century need to sharpen their thinking skills more than ever to function successfully in their academic, social and personal lives. The need for encouraging children’s thinking skills leads to a different approach to young learner education and teaching children to become effective thinkers is increasingly recognized as an immediate goal of education. Under the premise that young learners' thinking skills can be, and must be scaffolded and accelerated by effective instruction and guidance for their success in the whole life, this paper suggests that language education should consider the development of children’s thinking skills as well as improvement of linguistic competence. In line with this, it spotlights drama activities in English teaching which can be designed to activate thinking skills effectively. It posits that children can identify and solve problems, organize their experience and knowledge, and express and clarify their thoughts and feelings through drama activities, which are deliberately designed and skillfully guided by teachers. Effective application of drama activities in English teaching can be one of the ideal answers to how to improve children’s thinking skills let alone linguistic competence.
