초등영어교육과정에서의 문화 관련 성취기준 및 소재목록 설정 방안 연구

본 연구는 국내ㆍ외 수업 관찰을 통해 문화지도가 어떻게 이루어지고 있는지를 진단한 후, 국내ㆍ외 교육과정 분석을 바탕으로 문화와 관련된 성취기준을 교육과정에 설정하는 방안을 제시하였다. 또한 교과서 및 교사용 지도서 분석과 문헌연구를 통해 초등학교 영어 수업에서 반드시 포함되어야할 소재를 추출하고, 그 소재들이 학교급별․학년별로 교육과정에 어떻게 명시적으로 설정되어야 하는 지를 제안하였다. 구체적으로 살펴보면, 문화와 관련된 성취기준이 교육과정에 거의 없기 때문에 미국의 교육과정을 고려하여 ‘쉽고 간단한 영미문화 관련 글을 듣거나 읽고 상황을 이해한다. 문화간 유사점과 차이점을 조사하여 발표한다. 영미 문화 관련 대본을 쓰고 역할극을 한다.’ 등과 같은 구체적인 성취기준이 설정될 필요가 있음을 제안하였다. 또한 초등영어 수업에 반드시 필요한 문화적 범주들로 영미인의 생활양식 및 행동양식, 문화적 상징물, 언어적 의사소통, 비언어적 의사소통 등을 추출하였다. 더욱이 초등학교 학습자들은 모국어의 전략과 자료를 바탕으로 의사소통을 하는 초보단계에 속하기 때문에 어느 정도의 문화 충격을 겪게 된다는 점을 고려하여, 초등학교에서는 ‘가까운 주변의 친숙한 일상생활 관련 문화 소재’를 설정할 필요가 있음을 제안하였다. 제안된 내용을 중심으로, 3, 4학년에서는 가장 가까운 주변 소재인 ‘개인생활, 인사예절, 개인생활(식습관, 쇼핑, 여가시간 활동), 학교와 가정생활, 문화적 상징물(국기, 기념물, 동물), 예절, 비언어적 의사소통(음성, 얼굴 표정, 몸짓, 눈 마주침, 접촉, 공간, 시간)’ 등을, 5, 6학년에서는 3, 4학년에 더하여 첨가할 수 있는 친숙한 일상생활 관련 소재인 ‘예절과 초대, 사회생활 또는 지역 사회활동, 언어적 의사소통(발음, 강세, 발음, 어순)’ 등이 설정될 필요가 있음을 제안하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper was to suggest the list of achievement standards and topics based on culture in the Primary English National Curriculum. In order to achieve this purpose, the stages of acculturation such as tourist, survivor, immigrant, and citizen were reviewed. The relationship between the stages of acculturation and BICS(basic interpersonal communicative skills) was also presented. The 2008 English National Curriculum and Primary English Textbooks were analysed, and 4 teachers' classroom activities were diagnosed in the aspect of culture. The results indicated that the achievement standards and the topics based on the culture should be devised, and the cultural materials should be presented in the textbook and teachers' guide book. Especially, it was argued that in setting up achievement standards, the early stage such as tourist and survivor stage, in which the new culture is almost totally inaccessible, should be considered, because learners draw extensively on first language strategies and resources in the stage. Thus, in this paper, achievement standards and topics of the Primary English National Curriculum were suggested considering tourist stage and survivor stage.
