패턴시쓰기 활동은 전문계 고등학생들이 영어에 대한 흥미를 가지고 수업에 참여할 수 할 수 있게 하는 하나의 방안이 될 수 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 패턴시쓰기 활동을 통해서 어휘를 학습할 수 있는 지도방안을 마련하는 데에 있다. 이를 위해 Holmes & Moultons(2001)가 제안한 패턴시를 분석하여 교과서 수업에 적용할 수 있는 4가지 패턴을 선택하였다. 선택된 패턴을 영어숙달도가 낮은 전문계 고등학생들에게 적용하여 수업에 대한 흥미를 높여 참여도를 향상시키는 동시에 효과 적인 어휘학습이 이루어지는 지를 살펴보았다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 1) 패턴시쓰기 활동이 학생들의 단어의미관계 파악 능력과 품사이해력향상, 생산적 어휘 증가를 도울 수 있도록 조직이 되어 어휘력 향상에 효과가 있었다. 2) 패턴시 쓰기 활동을 하는 동안 학생들의 활발한 어휘학습전략 사용이 이루어졌다. 3) 짧지만 완성된 작품을 결과물로 갖게 됨으로써 학생들이 성취감을 느끼게 되면서 수업에의 참여도가 향상되었다 본 연구의 결과를 토대로 제언할 수 있는 바는 다음과 같다. 1) 어휘력 향상을 위해 학생들이 직접 어휘를 조작할 수 있는 활동을 투입해야한다. 2) 교사는 뚜렷한 학습목표를 가지고 적절한 활동을 선택할 수 있는 안목을 길러야 한다. 3) 새로운 활동이 수업에 성급하게 적용되면 전통적인 방법에 익숙해져 있는 학생들에게 역효과를 일으킬 수 있으므로 익숙한 활동들과 적절히 안배되어야 한다
Abstract
Pattern poetry writing can be a way to motivate vocational highschool students to be more involved in vocabulary learning. This study developed a vocabulary teaching-learning model using pattern poetry writing. Out of the twenty-five patterns suggested by Holmes and Moulton (2001), four patterns were modified and applied. In order to examine the effectiveness of this model, the current experiment was conducted with samples from 112 vocational high school students in Busan. The main findings of this study were as follows. First, writing pattern poems was effective in improving the students’ ability to understand the semantic relations of the words, the parts of speech, and improving productive vocabulary. Second, vocabulary learning strategies were frequently explored in pattern poem writing classes. Last, the students' attitude during and after the simple pattern poems classes was positively changed. Confirming previous research conducted on elementary students and university students, this study proved that teaching through pattern poems is applicable to all proficiency levels of students.
