Abstract

This study aimed to develop a design model and template for an “Interdisciplinary Unit by Concept-Based Inquiry (IUC)” and explore the feasibility of designing interdisciplinary integrated units. The key findings of this study are as follows: First, a four-step IUC design model was developed by integrating the procedures of concept-based curriculum and instructions with those of the concept-based inquiry learning model. This model comprises four procedural phases: curriculum analysis, setting goals for the integrated unit, establishing an evaluation plan for the unit, and planning the teaching and learning experiences for the unit. In addition, an IUC template was developed to facilitate the design of IUCs in school settings. Second, the IUC template developed in this study was used to design interdisciplinary unit titled “Our Lives with Media.” This unit included content from four subjects, namely, Korean language, music, art, and English, centered around the concept of “media,” which is commonly found across these subjects. The unit was structured aroundbased on four conceptual networks: types and functions of media, strategies and methods for media use, media and ethics, utilization of media. For each concept map, big ideas, guiding questions, key concepts, essential skills, values, and attitudes were developed. Moreover, the teaching and learning experiences were designed for 28 sessions, reflecting the seven elements of the concept-based inquiry: engage, focus, investigate, organize, generalize, transfer, and reflect. The IUC procedural model and template developed in this study are significant as they provide a valuable framework for used by individual schools in to design interdisciplinary integrated units.
