Abstract

This study aims to investigate elementary school teachers’ understanding of the world of work and future technologies in Seoul and to analyze differences according to demographic characteristics and career education experience. For the study, a tool for assessing understanding of the world of work was developed based on 130 occupations across 19 fields selected from CareerNet occupational information, and a tool for understanding future technologies was created by synthesizing data from reputable institutions on 15 promising technologies. A survey was conducted among 157 elementary school teachers from 15 schools in Seoul between March 25 and April 7, 2024, with 145 responses analyzed. The main results indicate that elementary school teachers had a high level of understanding of the world of work (mean: 4.13 out of 5), while their understanding of future technologies was moderate (mean: 3.15 out of 5), with especially lower scores in science and engineering occupations and technology-related fields. Significant differences in understanding of future technologies were found by gender, with male teachers showing higher comprehension in all technology-related fields than female teachers, particularly in areas such as ‘blockchain,’ ‘biological interface, and artificial neural network.’ No significant differences were observed by age, years of teaching experience, or administrative position. Teachers with experience as career guidance teachers demonstrated higher understanding in engineering occupations and specific future technologies such as ‘metaverse’ and ‘military drones,’ while teachers who had participated in career education training showed higher understanding of occupations in the fields of ‘AI/robotics, ‘IT/SW,’ and ‘aerospace/space,’ although there was no difference in understanding of future technologies according to career education training experience. These findings suggest the need for developing resources, providing training, and improving the educational environment to strengthen elementary school teachers’ expertise in the world of work and future technologies, offering important implications for promoting student career education and effectively responding to future social changes.
