Abstract
There has been an increasing turnover among early career elementary school teachers. Previous studies have tended to view teacher turnover as a homogeneous, pathological phenomenon, focusing on teachers who are unable to adjust to the profession or face burnout. These studies have often overlooked the diversity and complexity surrounding teacher attrition by emphasizing structural and environmental factors. This study employed qualitative narrative methods to examine the testimonies of novice teachers who left the profession, illuminating the diverse reasons and processes leading to their departure. The types of teacher turnover among early career elementary teachers were then analyzed. The results revealed that the teacher attrition among novice elementary school teachers can be categorized into three types. First, teachers in the “pushed out” category were dedicated to teaching and viewed the profession positively, but were forced out of the profession due to the challenging conditions of teaching. Second, teachers in the “pulled out” category had not yet formed a firm identity or commitment to teaching and were drawn away from the profession by external factors, including the emergence of new opportunities. The last category included “conflicted” teachers, who faced extensive internal conflict during their careers despite entering the profession in pursuit of long-held dreams and eventually left to pursue other goals. This study expands the horizon of future research and its findings provide more realistic, concrete practical and policy implications by moving away from a limited, traditional perspective of teacher turnover and its causes.
