Abstract

Despite the recent interest on teacher turnover, there is a lack of empirical, in-depth research that focuses on the voices of teachers themselves regarding why they choose to leave the profession. Existing research on teacher attrition has tended to portray it as a problem of burned-out and disappointed teachers who are not well adjusted to the profession. In contrast, this study focuses on the paradoxical phenomenon of talented and committed teachers leaving the profession and analyzes why and how they decided to leave. Findings can be summarized as follows First, teachers were committed and passionate about teaching when they started, and their job satisfaction was high. Second, the factors that pushed committed teachers out of the profession included their status as public servants, negative complaints, poor mental and physical health, and loss of pride in teaching. Third, an interesting finding emerged is that teachers who have left the profession have not left the profession entirely, but are shifters from education-related fields to related fields where they are still working in education. In other words, they were “still teachers” and committed to the field of education. In the discussion and conclusions, the theoretical implications of teacher turnovers and practical implications for teacher education and teacher policy are presented, along with suggestions for further research.
