Abstract
This study aimed to provide a basis for customizing educational strategies by analyzing the effects of growth mindset on academic achievement and considering the mediating role of class attitudes across achievement levels. Using the second-wave data of the Seoul Education Longitudinal Study 2020 fourth-grade panel (n= 3,493), the study conducted path and quantile regression analyses, excluding missing values, to examine direct and mediating effects. The results indicated that growth mindset exerted significant positive effects on academic achievement through the mediating role of class attitude across subjects. Mathematics demonstrated the largest mediating effect (B = 0.572, β = 0.106), followed by English (B = 0.466, β = 0.094) and Korean (B = 0.491, β = 0.086). The direct effects of growth mindset were limited or negative, thus confirming a suppression effect. Quantile regression analysis revealed that the effects of growth mindset varied according to achievement levels. For mathematics and English, the effects depicted an inverted U-shaped pattern with maximum effects at the median quantile (50th percentile), while Korean displayed a linear pattern that gradually decreased with the increase in achievement levels. Middle-achieving students exhibited the strongest indirect effects of growth mindset. These findings imply that the effects of educational interventions based on growth mindset differ across students, which necessitates differentiated approaches based on achievement levels and subject characteristics. Growth mindset education that focuses on mathematics and targets middle-achieving students may be most effective, thus providing important evidence for the efficient allocation of limited educational resources.
