Abstract
This study investigated the structural features of student discourse in mathematical problem-solving during three types of conflict: strategic, belief-based, and social. Fifth-grade students from a Seoul elementary school were grouped into 11 pairs based on mathematics achievement. They engaged in collaborative problem-solving tasks, generating 33 discourse episodes, which were captured using audio and video recordings. The discourse was qualitatively analyzed using Kieran’s (2001) Flow Chart framework. In strategic conflict, object-level discourse followed a recurring proactive–reactive proactive pattern. These interactions supported metacognitive shifts and strategic refinement. In belief-based conflict situations, differing views on problem-solving led to tension. Persuasive but object-detached exchanges reflected clashes in mathematical beliefs. In social conflict situations, issues like dominance and emotional expression caused breakdowns in collaboration. The discourse indicated misalignment between utterances and non-object-level responses. These utterances were typically affective and nonmathematical. The findings revealed that discourse in conflict situations fosters cognitive movement and mutual understanding. It serves as more than linguistic exchange, enabling negotiation and conceptual development. This study thus demonstrated the educational potential of structured discourse in mathematics learning and provides a foundation for discourse-based instructional strategies. Understanding discourse structures can help educators support students’ collaborative reasoning. Tailored instructional design should consider redirecting conflict to enhance learning outcomes. By addressing the complexity of student dialog, teachers can foster deeper mathematical engagement through discourse, which plays a central role in promoting meaning-making and cooperative problem-solving in mathematics education.
