Abstract

This article explores creative reading methods based on Deleuze and Guattari’s (1980) concept of minority language. These authors divide languages into their majority and minority forms according to the consciousness of language users. Majority language is defined by its dominance in terms of use and power. Minority language refers to the languages used by minorities and is defined by its “capacity of variation” and creative power. Majority and minority languages perform the function of surplus command in language situations. Majority language implements the universality, standardization, and commonality of a language and acts as a rule of constants. However, it also acts as a linguistic “death sentence” that prevents the language user from constructing a sense of self. On the other hand, minority language permits the individuality, uniqueness, and singularity of a language through its capacity of variation. This enables language users to escape from the majority language and engage in creative self-construction. Majority and minority languages act in similar ways on reading methods: reading in the majority language emphasizes conventional methods that prioritize constants, while reading in the minority language emphasizes creative reading that enables variation. Readers’ creative reading methods within the minority language can be categorized in three ways. The first is variation reading, which is related to the generative meaning. This allows the reader to create new meanings by continuously reinterpreting the variables of a text. The second is autonomous reading, a method that involves immersing the reader in the reading task and creating unique meanings. The third method is immortal reading, which is related to the results of reading. This allows the reader to be reborn every time they read a text. Readers who practice reading texts based on the minority language thus engage in a creative process that renews them every time they read.
