Abstract
The growing importance of problem-solving in an era of technological integration underscores the need for information education tailored to students with developmental disabilities, enabling them to strengthen both computational thinking and problem-solving skills. To address this end, this study designed and implemented an eight-session unplugged coding program aligned with the achievement standards of the 2022 Revised Special Education Curriculum. The program aimed to foster procedural thinking and problem-solving skills in elementary students with developmental disabilities. Participants were five fifth- and sixth-grade students enrolled in a special school. Changes were measured using procedural thinking tests and classroom behavior observations. The results showed that all participants improved their procedural thinking test scores, with some demonstrating steady growth and others exhibiting accelerated progress in the later sessions. Although learning pace and developmental patterns varied based on individual abilities, observation records indicated that participants acquired a basic understanding of command blocks and options, with some able to adjust block sequences and solve problems through debugging. While this study was a short-term, small-scale exploratory effort, it provides empirical evidence that coding education based on the special education curriculum can positively influence the development of procedural thinking in elementary students with developmental disabilities. These findings highlight the need for long-term studies and the development of customized instructional strategies to further enhance the computational thinking of students with developmental disabilities and advance equity in information education.
