Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to reveal the modern mass’s perception of science and a characteristic of children’s science education through the analysis of the mystery that has emerged as a characteristic of modern scientific culture. Therefore, the characteristics of science and mystery in modern children’s culture were revealed by examining the characteristics of Cold War science and the reproduction of mysteries revealed in “Boys World”, two children’s magazines published during the Cold War era. As a result, it was found that the mystery of modern children goes beyond simple play, and reflects the contemporary scientific view, political unconscious, and public anxiety and skepticism. Mystery discourses formed in “Boys World” can be categorized into four types of bizarre events, monstrous animals, ghosts, and UFOs to examine their characteristics. As a result of the analysis, these mystery discourses reflected the public’s anxiety and fear in the Cold War era, which led to their country’s victory through science and technology, and a strong skepticism about modernity. Mystery has served as an educational function to learn and train science representing advanced civilization, while at the same time reminding the dysfunction of science and technology civilization and showing instability of the times. In the atmosphere of the times where the backwardness of developing countries is a problem, children have been pointed out as the realizing agents of security science. The path to becoming a great detective who solves mysteries and realizes rational science was the core goal of the Small People Project. The ideology and science of the Cold War tried to intervene in the growth of modern children and make them into ‘investigative reporting’ subject that uncovered secrets by examining evidence and reasoning. Mysteries claiming science education simultaneously produced a sense of pleasure that goes against the zeitgeist of security science.
