Abstract
Increasing popularity of the Korean Wave (Hallyu) has resulted in a curiosity not only about Korean culture, but also about the Korean language in people worldwide. In China, the popularity of Korean dramas, variety shows, and K-pop music has prompted widespread adoption of the word “ouba,” which originated from Korean. This study analyzes the first use of “ouba” in Chinese news, its semantic evolution, and pragmatic usage based on Chinese news sources and corpus data. The term first appeared in Chinese news articles in 2004 and has since been used in everyday Chinese language for an extended period. Initially, “ouba” was primarily used to refer to Korean male actors and singers, however, gradually, its usage expanded to include Chinese male celebrities. More recently, it has even been applied to ordinary men. This suggests that “ouba” is not simply a temporary buzzword, but is becoming established as a stable neologism in Chinese. Corpus analysis of attributive modifiers highlights “ouba” as a unique form of address. In Chinese, descriptive modifiers emphasize the defining traits of the noun they modify. Corpus data reveal that “ouba” is often associated with attributes such as “long legs” and “handsome appearance.” Additionally, restrictive modifiers help distinguish the noun from others in the same category. In the corpus, the most common restrictive modifiers for “ouba” are the proper noun “Korea” and personal pronouns. This strong association with Korea reflects the word’s origin, while the use of personal pronouns typically conveys positive emotional connotations as they modify a favored subject. This pragmatic distinction sets “ouba” apart from the Chinese kinship term “gege,” which also means “older brother.”
