초록

Currently, it is known that the Vietnamese language has six tones: ngang, huy󰐊n, hỏi, ngã, sắc, and nặng. However, since the tones sắc and nặng are divided into two categories depending on whether the final consonant is stop or not, there are actually eight tones. In this paper, I tried to describe each tone in modern standard Vietnamese with numbers from 1 to 5 so that Vietnamese learners can learn tones more easily. Based on the results of the review, the tone values of each tone in Vietnamese are expressed as follows: ngang 33, huyền 21, hỏi 213, ngã 325(214), sắc(去聲) 24, sắc(入聲) 45, nặng(去聲) 21, nặng(入聲) 2. However, the pronunciations of huyền and nặng tones with the same tone value are different. Besides, the following tone sandhi phenomena were also observed. First, the nặng tone is pronounced as the lowest sound after the huyền tone. Second, the nặng tones of rùshēng(入聲) and qùshēng(去聲) seem to be in the process of integration. Third, the ngã tone has a higher pitch when pronounced alone, and has a lower pitch when pronounced with other tone syllables.
