Poetic Characteristics of Aleksandr Tvardovskij’s Vasilij Terkin

Aleksandr Tvardovskij’s Vasilij Terkin is greatly and deeply loved by Russian readers. The reasons of this popularity lie in several facts: there was the same titled literary works providing familiarity to the readers; some parts of this work were published before than the complete work putting the readers in the situation of expecting next chapters of this work; the distinctive poetic characteristic of this poema. In this article such poetic characteristics as structural peculiarity disputes over genre problems, rhetorical humors, author’s roles and positions, the characterization of the hero, Vasilij Terkin, and patriotism have been delved into details. This poema consists of thirty chapters including five chapters of author’s direct appearances with 5,217 lines. The longest chapter is ‘Terkin wound’ with two hundreds and eighty two lines, on the other hand, the shortest chapter is ‘About war’ with sixty four lines. Despite all the critics consider this work as a poema, Tvardovskij sub-titled this work as ‘a book.’ The poetic function of the sub-title has been analyzed as the maximization of poetic freedom. The humors in this work provide possibility of easy reading the war situations. Tvardovskij’s direct appearance as the author in this work has significances of his relationship to the hero and to the readers. The patriotism of this work is indispensable theme because this works is fundamentally about the WWII. The theme patriotism unites all the characters and chapters as an infra structural base that flows from the beginning to the end of this work.
