근대 세계체제, 인문정신, 그리고 한국의 대학 ―‘두개의 문화’ 문제를 중심으로

월러스틴은 인문학과 자연과학이 ‘두 개의 문화’로 분리된 현상을 근대 세계체제의 본질적인 구성요인으로 파악하며 자본주의 세계체제의 최종 위기국면에 이르러 양자의 분리 극복이 핵심적인 지적 과제로 등장했음을 설파한다. 다만 인문학 내부에서 진행되어온 그러한 극복노력에 대한 인식이 미흡하며 이는 월러스틴 자신의 이론적 한계와도 무관하지 않다. 본고는 ‘두 문화’론을 둘러싼 이른바 ‘스노우-리비스 논란’과 특히 문학평론가 리비스의 사상을 새로 조명함으로써 근대적 인식론을 넘어설 인문학의 진정한 혁신과 이에 합당한 진리관 및 실천론을 모색한다. 끝으로 대학(특히 한국 대학)과 관련해서, 인문정신 및 인문교육에서 ‘문학비평적’ 능력의 긴요함, 동아시아 전통에서 강조해온 ‘道’ 또는 ‘眞如’를 근대의 조건 속에서 되살릴 필요성, 이런 의미의 인문학 혁신이 ‘인식론’ 또는 ‘지식의 구조’ 차원을 넘어설 수밖에 없는 점, 그리고 한국의 대학이 이런 과제를 감당하기에 불리한 현실과 잠재적인 가능성 등을 개략적으로 언급한다.
Abstract
Immanuel Wallerstein's discussion of the 'two cultures' has the special merit of recognizing the essential role of their separation in the formation and maintenance of the modern world-system, and of explaining how current attempts to overcome the gap constitute a crucial intellectual task in the terminal crisis of historical capitalism. He seems less adequate, however, in appreciating the efforts in this direction within the field of humanities, and this is not unrelated to certain limitations in his own theoretical endeavors. This paper attempts to delineate the true spirit of humanities along with corresponding notions of 'truth' and praxis by reexamining the 'Snow-Leavis Controversy', with particular attention to the thought of the literary critic F. R. Leavis. The concluding section addresses the university, the Korean university in particular, and sets forth a number of brief propositions, such as the special importance of 'literary critical' ability in any revitalized humanities and humane education, the need to revive the traditional East Asian notions of 'the Way' or 'Truth' fitted to modern conditions, the necessity of such renewal of the humanities to go beyond the realm of mere epistemology or structure of knowledge, and the unpropitious yet potentially hopeful conditions of Korean universities to rise to the moment.
