Abstract

This article focused on Biseok Jung’s sense of post-politic in his works using the word, cheerfulness, from the liberation of Korea to Korean war. Jung’s sense of post-politic appeared to be as acceptance of “The Century of Fact”, fatalism, and necessarianism. After-colonial area, the space of liberation, was the period which was full of the will to handle the matter of post-politic and establishment of nation-State by the main agents themselves who were liberated. It was difficult decision to clean up the pervading vestiges of Japanese imperialism. However, it was also necessary to be a man as a citizen of modern nation-State. If we call this a movement of denaturalization or denaturing of human nature, Jung’s work was against this movement. Masculinity, which authors who argued Jung’s work had pointed, was not the same as man as a citizen. The definition of man as a citizen came out when the term, man, was considered in relation to modern political matters. The term, man, which Jung used, was referred to a masculinity which means a sexually dominant order, and a masculinity is similar to the fascist system. These two types of masculinity were incompatible. By considering two types of masculinity, we can see clearly what Jung’s definition of masculinity has hidden. Two of Jung’s work, "Jangmiuigyejul(Season of Roses)" and "Dohoeuijeongyeol (Passion in Cities), were written during the period when the sovereignty was being determined by external influence and a few number of representatives as a movement of establishing single government in Korea was raging. That is, they were written after 1947. However, the request for the people's sovereignty had not begin to wane. Uprising in Daegu, resistance in Jeju, on April 3rd,, 1947, and the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident are these examples. Jung used the term, cheerfulness, as the way Lee government did. But the term, cheerfulness, was used to hide social anxiety and rebellious aspects of society. Therefore, revealing for what cheerfulness was would cause crack in stability of Korean society. Cheerfulness in Season of Roses showed the point of rupture. But the term, cheerfulness, had gone to a negative one in Passion in Cities. Instead, womanhood was used as a positive term. It is because cheerfulness was on the border defining the boundary of governance and womanhood was more stable than cheerfulness. And the term, cheerfulness, was inside of governance. This was another representation of ‘tamed man’ or ‘small man’ which Jung had since the Japanese colonial area.
