우리나라에서 영재교육은 이제 시작에 불과하며, 더더구나 국어와 관련한 언어․문학 영재교육은 그 역사나 학생 수 등에서도 매우 미미한 실정이다. 이러한 이유에는 국가적 투자나 관심의 부족도 있겠지만 그동안 관련 연구 부족도 언급되지 않을 수 없다. 영재성은 재능과 구별된다. 가네(Gagné)는 영재성(giftedness)과 재능(talent)을 각각 선천적 능력과 후천적 숙달성으로 차별화하되, 상위 10% 이내로 특정 영역에서 현저한 능력을 보인다는 점을 공통점으로 제시하고 있다. 이는 20세기 초반에 상위 1%로 좁게 잡았던 영재성의 개념이 최근 들어 10%까지, 심지어 렌줄리의 경우는 ‘평균 이상의 능력’으로 정의함으로써, 훨씬 더 상향 조정하고자 하는 관점을 보여준다. 또한 ‘영재’와 ‘재능’에 대한 개념이 구분됨과 동시에 둘 모두가 교육적 관심의 대상으로 고려하고 있음을 보여준다. 가네의 이러한 탁견에도 불구하고 이는 어디까지나 영재성과 재능에 대한 일반 모형에 불과하기 때문에 언어․문학 영재성이나 재능의 논의에 그대로 차용하기에는 많은 한계가 있다. 따라서 본고에서는 선천적인 언어․문학 영재성의 하위 요소로 ‘언어 기호 처리 능력, 창의적 언어․문학 능력, 정의적 사고 능력, 가치적 사고 능력’으로 구분하여 제시하였다. 또한 영재성을 발현시키는 개인 내적 영역의 핵심 특성으로 ‘언어 태도 및 성향’과 ‘언어생활 및 교수․학습 환경’이 촉매 역할을 하는 것으로 보았다. 언어․문학의 영재성은 개인 내적 영역과 환경 영역에 적절하게 노출되었을 때 언어․문학적 재능으로 발현될 가능성이 매우 높다. 언어․문학적 재능의 구체적 수행 분야는 학문, 예술, 언론, 경영, 대인관계, 정보 통신 등 다양한 분야에서 다양한 형태로 발현될 수 있다. 향후 구체적인 판별 도구와 프로그램을 통해 한국 아동들의 언어․문학 영재교육이 활성화될 것으로 기대된다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the elements of giftedness and talent, relating them to the competence and thinking skills in Korean language and literature. There was a turning point of researching giftedness and talent in Korea after the legislation of the laws of giftedness in 2000. Unfortunately, we can only find just a few research papers and results regarding giftedness in Korean Education so far. F. Gagné(2004) differentiated giftedness from talent, defining them respectively as natural abilities and developed abilities(or skills) and knowledge in at least one ability domain, to a degree that places an individual at least in the top 10% of his or her age group. The viewpoint of F. Gagné contributed to the differentiation of the gifted and talented, extending those ranges which were limited to just 1% in the early years of the 20th century. In addition, Renzulli extended the range to almost the upper 50% by defining giftedness as “above the ability.” Even though Gagné and Renzulli had fine ideas and suggested differentiated models regarding giftedness and talent, those are general models. So their models have limitations when we try to apply them to the area of language and literature. Therefore, I suggested specific elements of giftedness in the language-literature area, in particular Korean language, such as “abilities of processing linguistic code and text, creative language and literature, value judgment, affective thinking abilities.” The fundamental characteristics of the intrapersonal domain which make manifest the talent consist of language attitudes and motivations, teaching-learning environment and language experience. These elements play roles as catalysts for talent in specific areas such as academics, arts, press, managements, interpersonal relations and ICT.
