大韓每日申報에 나타난 ‘民族’ 槪念에 관한 硏究

이 論文의 目的은 啓蒙期 大韓每日申報에 나타난 民族 槪念의 歷史的 特性을 糾明하는 데 있다. 民族이라는 用語는 韓國의 근현대를 이해하는데 없어서는 안 될 정도로 커다란 重要性을 갖고 있다. 그러나 文獻을 통해 검토해본 바에 따르면 民族이라는 用語는 1908년 大韓每日申報에서 활발하게 사용되기 이전까지는 그리 잘 사용되지 않았을 뿐만 아니라 1908년 이후에도 人民, 同胞, 國民과 큰 차이가 없이 사용되고 있었다. 民族이라는 用語가 出現하는 과정에서 그 의미는 특정 지역의 거주민, 人種, 身分, 階級 등 다양하게 규정되었다. 물론 1908년의 논설을 통해 어느 정도 時/空間적인 意味 규정이 시도되었고 오늘날과 같은 의미를 갖게 되었지만 당시의 시점에서 民族 槪念은 그것이 오늘날 부여받고 있는 정도의 우선성과 중요성을 갖고 있지는 않았던 것으로 보인다. 다만 이후의 논설에서 民族 槪念은 精神으로 된 國家를 유지해야한다는 주장으로 자주 활용되었다. 지금은 망해도 언젠가는 國權을 回復할 것이라는 희망은 국권을 회복할 主體로서 호명된 ‘民族’이라는 단어에 시대를 뛰어넘는 超越性을 부여함으로써 이루어졌던 것이다. 이러한 방식으로 民族 槪念은 점차 完成되어 갔다.
Abstract
A Study on the notion of 'Nation(Minjok)' in The Korea Daily News Kim, Dong-taek This study examines the notion of 'nation' in modern Korea in historical context. The goal of this study is to answer ⅰ) When did the notion of 'Minjok' appear in modern Korea ⅱ) what is the characteristic feature and development of the 'Minjok' notion in the period of enlightenment. To Answer this question, this study starts by examining The Korea Daily News with the historical context. Nationalism in Korea is under the debate. Through the examining The Korea Daily News, this article find out that, before 1906, use of Minjok was very rare and, from 1908, Minjok notion became popular in The Korea Daily News. During the period of enlightenment, there were many important notions like Dongpo, Inmin, Kukmin. These notions were used to motivate patriotism and keep the empire. Among them, Minjok notion was quite new one. After appeared, it had several meanings including people, race, ethnicity, nation, and etc. As political situation of Korea became worse under the protectorate state of Japanese Empire, The Korea Daily News gave minjok with meaning of historical substance and racial purity. Later on, Minjok became most powerful word to justify the history of Korea and Korean. However, the word Minjok itself was appeared around 1907. We have to find out how Minjok gained such a strong power during the 20th century.
