네이션과 민족: 개념사로 본 의미의 간격

이 논문은 한국적 맥락에서 사용되는 ‘민족’ 개념과 서구역사 및 일반이론에서 논의되는 네이션(nation) 개념의 비교를 목적으로 한다. 19세기 말 서구로부터 네이션 개념이 처음은 ‘국민’이라는 번역어와 연관되어, 나중에는 ‘민족’이라는 번역어와 관계되어 수용되었지만 그로부터 1세기를 지나는 동안 양자의 관계는 매우 복잡해졌고 그 의미도 다양해졌다. 이 논문은 네이션과 민족의 관계를 서구와 한국, 보편과 특수, 원어와 번역어의 관계로 보아서는 안 된다고 주장하고 개념사적 관점에서 세 가지 점을 강조한다. 첫째는 세계사적 차원의 담론과 국내적 논의 사이에 형성되는 특수한 시간성을 주목해야 한다. 번역의 형태로 두 개념이 조우하게 된 1890년대와 다양한 탈민족 담론이 거론되는 1990년대 이후의 시간성이 갖는 차이를 충분히 감안해야 현재의 민족논의와 서구의 네이션 담론 사이의 관련성을 제대로 이해할 수 있다. 둘째로 이론적인 수준에서 논의되는 ‘네이션’과 한반도의 역사적 경험 속에서 형성되고 작동하는 ‘민족’ 사이의 의미 차이를 준별해야 한다. 개념이 갖는 역사성과 정치성, 번역과정에 동반되는 변형, 미끄러짐, 전유, 긴장들을 분석할 수 있어야 하기 때문이다. 셋째로 개념의 역사성과 사회성을 충분히 드러내려면 관련된 다른 개념들과의 차이와 연관에 주목해야 한다고 주장하고 최소한 국민, 종족과의 비교 속에서 민족 개념이 이해되어야 한다는 점을 강조한다. 네이션 일반의 이론적 문제의식을 충분히 고려하되, 한반도의 경험을 바탕으로 정치적, 역사문화적, 혈통적 차원을 준별하는 다학제적인 접근이 이루어져야 한다는 것이다.
Abstract
This paper aims at exploring the similarity and difference between the Korean concept of ‘minjok' and the Western concept of ‘nation.' Both concepts have been usually understood as identical since the former was a translation of the latter in the late nineteenth century. This paper, however, argues that the relationship between two concepts should not be considered as that between Korea and the West, original and translation, or universal and particular. In order to understand the socio-political meaning of Korean ‘minjok,' this paper argues that at least three points need to be emphasized. Firstly, the contemporary intellectual context in which diverse discourses on the ‘post-national' and/or ‘anti-national' are distributed is very different from that of the period of 1890's when the concept of ‘nation' was introduced into Korea. Without taking those differences into consideration, it would be difficult to capture the socio-historical implications of the contemporary minjok-related discourses in Korea. Secondly, it is very important to differentiate the theoretical level of the concept itself and its socio-historical usages in particular contexts. Sociological perspectives with the idea of reconstruction of meaning, misinterpretation effects, political appropriation by diverse agencies, etc. need to be considered in exploring historical discourses. Finally, since all historical concepts are working within a interrelated semantic world, it would be inappropriate to analyse the minjok concept separately. This paper argues that at least two concepts need to be considered together; gukmin as membership in a state and jongjok as an ethnic community. In that context, the Korean word minjok has a very special meaning in regards to the collective will of forming a unified political community between South and North Korea in future.
