Abstract

Previous studies showed that many teachers and students did not know the moderndefinition of chemical element and they had difficulties distinguishing the concept from that ofthe atom. One of the reasons for this might be the insufficiency of descriptions for the chemicalelement in textbooks. In this study, the descriptions for the chemical element in the currentsecondary school textbooks were reviewed. Nine Science ② textbooks for middle school andfour Chemistry I textbooks for high school published based on the 2009 Revised NationalCurriculum were selected and the contents of the chapters related to chemical element wereanalysed from several perspectives. The results showed that the definition of chemical elementin the textbooks was found to be a macroscopic one; the chemical element is a basic componentof matter and cannot be decomposed into simpler matter. The microscopic meaning of chemicalelement compared to atom was presented afterwards. However, the concept of chemicalelement as a species of atoms only appeared in a few middle school Science ② textbooks. Highschool Chemistry I textbooks had only the concept of chemical element as an elementarysubstance. Some high school Chemistry I textbooks used the expression of ‘basic substance’instead of ‘basic component’. It is proposed that textbooks present both definitions of chemicalelement- a species of atoms and an elementary substance- after the atomic concept isintroduced.
