Abstract

This paper examines the background and characteristics of the establishment of Geumryeong Bak Yeong-bo(1808-1872)’s envoy poetry collection YeonsaSocho, focusing on the trip to Beijing that is considered to have great significance in his life. YeonsaSocho is organized in volumes 1-2 of Bak Yeong-bo’s poetry collection Agyeongdangsi-jungjip, and contains a total of 357 poems that Bak Yeong-bo created while traveling back and forth to China after being appointed as deputy envoy of the Jinha Sahaeng in October 1862. The work that is particularly noteworthy in YeonsaSocho is the 100 poems titled ‘Yeonhaeng Jap-eon’. In the 1860s, the Qing Dynasty was suffering from extreme internal and external troubles due to the successive outbreaks of the Taiping Rebellion and the Second Opium War. In particular, when Bak Yeong-bo traveled there, it was not long after the death of the Xianfeng Emperor and the accession of the Tongzhi Emperor, and Bak Yeong-bo described in detail the chaotic social conditions of the Qing Dynasty that he had witnessed in the form of a series of poems. It is also noteworthy that ‘Hwain-Sichal-Jeeo’ was included as an appendix at the end of YeonsaSocho. It includes poems and letters from Kong Xianyi, Dong Wenhuan, Shen Bingcheng, Wanh Xuan, Zhang Shizhun, and Cheng Gongshou, whom Bak Yeong-bo met in Beijing, allowing us to confirm the specific aspects of literary exchange between the two sides. The 19th century, when Bak Yeong-bo traveled, was a period of stability in exchanges between Korean and Chinese writers, and the tendency to include poems, letters, and written messages received from Chinese writers in the main text of his diary or in separate chapters appeared in his travel records. Bak Yeong-bo wanted to highlight the personal network he had built in Beijing by including poems from Qing writers in his travel poetry collection. This is a common feature found in his cousin Bak Yeong-won’s travel poetry collection, Yeonsarok(1846), and is a rare case among the extant travel poetry collections. Bak Yeong-bo had a detailed understanding of the trends in the Beijing literary world from early on through his teacher Shin Wi, as well as acquaintances who had travel experiences, such as Kwon Yeong-jwa, Jeong Won-yong, Lee Yu-won, Kim Yeong-jak, and Shin Seok-woo, and hoped to interact with Chinese figures as fellow travelers. Bak Yeong-bo selected outstanding poems from among those included in the Agyeongdangsi- Chojip and the Agyeongdangsi-Seongjip, made AgyeongdangSicho, and took it to China to show it to Kong Xianyi for his critique. He also actively communicated with the Qing literary by composing poems to Dong Wenhuan’s 『Chuhuichanghuasi』 along with his son Bak Bong-bin and interpreter Lee Yong-suk. Bak Yeong-bo’s YeonsaSocho is a notable collection of poetry from the mid-19th century that has value as a source.
