Abstract
Surimono(摺物), which literally means “printed things,” are privately commissioned woodblock prints commonly inscribed with poems. Unlike the commercially distributed and popular ukiyo-e prints, surimono were custom-made upon request by individuals or literary groups and were circulated outside of commercial networks during the late Edo period. Surimono prints are characterized by the use of various materials such as gold, silver, brass, copper, etc., as well as sophisticated gauffrage techniques that reveal texture and depth on the paper surface. This paper examines the specific features and meanings of these elaborate techniques in surimono prints, employing a sensory approach to both the production and appreciation process. This paper first analyzes the intricate and diverse techniques employed in surimono prints created in the late eighteenth to early nineteenth centuries, considered the heyday of surimono production as the detailed techniques reached their peak. In particular, this paper explores the context of “visual tactility” or “tactile visuality” of surimono in 1) the interplay among text, image, and technique, 2) the collaborative process among poets, print-designers (e-shi), print-carvers (hori-shi), and printers (suri-shi) in the production and ordering of prints, and 3) the playful aspects of the prints in their production, distribution (as gifts) and ownership, and appreciation. Therefore, this paper suggests that the elaborate techniques in surimono prints were a reflection of urban citizens’ intellectual and cultural playfulness, serving as a means for patrons to reveal themselves while also being a cultural product that was ordered and consumed.
