Abstract

In 18th-century Suzhou, woodblock prints employing Western artistic techniques were produced, with prints depicting the Suzhou cityscape emerging as a significant theme that reflected the identity of the local inhabitants, creating unique characteristics that distinguished Suzhou prints from those of other regions. These Suzhou prints were widely disseminated to Japan, not only conveying Western artistic styles but also introducing the urban theme of “Suzhou.” This study focuses on the transmission and re-creation of the specific urban theme of “Suzhou” in Japan and explores the differences between the Suzhou images depicted locally and those reinterpreted in Japan. In Suzhou, the city's image was closely linked to the daily lives of its residents, grounded in the development of the local commercial culture. These prints were created in response to the demands of local merchants, merchants from other regions, and the local government. The middle class of Suzhou, using their economic power, sought to present new urban imagery that reflected their professions, events, and achievements. They established an image of Suzhou as a bustling commercial hub while simultaneously creating a new image that integrated local and external cultural elements. As Suzhou prints were disseminated through Nagasaki to Japan, the images of Suzhou depicted in Japan diminished the focus on commercial activities and daily life, emphasizing instead an idealized representation of the exotic cityscape. In the works of peep-box pictures and Nagasaki-e, Suzhou was portrayed with effective use of perspective, highlighting the architectural beauty of the city or as a vibrant, imagined urban landscape. This demonstrates how the image of Suzhou was transformed and reconfigured according to the cultural characteristics and temporal demands of different regions, and reveals the process of development through cross-cultural interactions within East Asia.
