Abstract

This study analyzes the experiences of modern Korean writers on Haeinsa Temple, seeking to understand their place identity and sense of place. People's identities with Haeinsa Temple cannot be explained solely through its traditional identity as the central temple of Hwaeom Buddhism. This study sought to foster a new understanding of Haeinsa's placeness through the subjective perceptions and sentiments of Korean writers. To achieve this, we focused on the Hongdo Inn, the only inn on Haeinsa Temple grounds but now gone, and on Jeongwol Rha Hye-seok and Hyangpa Lee Ju-hong, who demonstrated their unique experiences of Haeinsa through this inn. During her stay at the Hongdo Inn, Rha Hye-seok experienced Haeinsa as an ambivalent place, both for monks and laypeople. Lee Ju-hong, a frequent visitor to the inn, used it as a non-secular studio and a mystical meeting place. Hongdo Inn was demolished under the Park Chung-hee regime's Temple Purification Ordinance. Since then, it no longer evokes the sense of Haeinsa as a place for monks and laypeople.
