다 카포 아리아와 소나타 형식: 로젠의 『소나타 형식들』중 “아리아” 장 읽기

소나타 형식은 18세기 말 비엔나 고전 양식이 이룩했던 최고의 성취라고 평가되어 왔다. 이러한 담론은 19세기 순수 기악 음악에 부여된 가치를 정당화하는 기본 원리가 되었다. 독일 통일을 향한 민족주의적 열망이 짙게 반영된 이러한 담론은 당시의 상황을 감안하면 어느 정도 정당화될 수 있는 여지가 있으나, 이러한 경향이 지나쳐 실제 있었던 일을 왜곡시키는 데까지 이르면 문제가 된다. 19세기에서 20세기로 넘어가는 시점에 일어났던 만하임 악파 에피소드는 바로 이러한 왜곡된 담론의 대표적인 사례이다. 비엔나 고전 양식의 뿌리가 만하임 악파에 있다는 리만의 재해석은 20세기 음악사 담론에 그림자를 길게 드리우고 있다. 로젠의 『소나타 형식들』중 “아리아” 장은 이러한 역사 왜곡을 바로잡는데 도움이 된다. 소나타 형식의 뿌리가 특정 지역이나 악파에 국한된 것이 아니라는 것을 보여주었기 때문이다. 가장 설득력 있는 주장은 다 카포 아리아 첫 부분과 느린 악장 소나타 형식이 조성 구조상 사실상 같다는 것을 실증적으로 보여준 것이다. 이러한 성과는 와이머의 『고전 양식』비판을 비롯한 오페라 세리아 연구자들의 반론 및 연구 성과를 기꺼이 받아들여 승화시킨 결과인 것으로 보인다. 또한 로젠의 주장의 핵심은 이미 1913년 덴트가 쓴 오페라 세리아가 고전 양식에 끼친 영향을 강조한 글에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 결국 로젠의 『소나타 형식들』의 영향은 지나치게 분석 일변도였던 소나타 형식에 대한 논의를 보다 폭넓은 열린 시각으로 바라볼 수 있는 계기를 마련해 주었다는 데 있다. 웹스터와 헤포코스키의 최근 연구 성과도 로젠의 문제 제기가 없었더라면 그 전개 양상이 지금과 같지 않았을 것이다.
Abstract
Sonata form has been extolled as a culmination of Viennese Classical Style. It has served the cause of nationalistic German Romantic musical discourse as a proof of the superiority of purely instrumental music. Such a discourse can be justified as far as goes. It is over the limit when such an exertion resulted in historical distortion. An episode concerning so called “Mannheim School” is a good example. Riemann, in his endeavor to reorganize music history in line with such an ideology, tried to establish pure instrumental music of Mannheim School as a sole precursor of Viennese Classical masterworks. Rosen’s inclusion of “aria” chapter can be read as an antidote for such an attitudinal discourse. The gist of this chapter is that the slow-movement sonata form was derived from the A section of the full da capo aria. Since the same composer tried to solve the same problem of tonal structure in both forms, there must have been interaction between vocal and instrumental music. Such a view is not new at all. Dent, as early as 1913, wrote an article claiming the influence of Italian opera seria on Viennese Classics. The “revisionism” of Rosen’s book also influenced the later writing on sonata form such as Webster and Hepokoski. Perhaps the most profound contribution of Rosen’s book is that it emancipate the discourse on sonata form from monolithic conventional wisdom of “The Ideology of Absolute Music”.
