Abstract

J. S. Bach’s Aria Forms: Da Capo and Beyond Kayoung Lee This study argues that the conventional da capo aria form does not directly and readily apply to Bach’s arias. By analyzing a number of arias including ‘Ach, mein Sinn’ from St. John Passion and ‘Erbarme dich’ from St. Matthew Passion, this study illustrates various ways in which Bach modifies, manipulates, and deviates from the conventional form. Also, my analysis will trace Bach’s compositional procedure in detail, articulating how Bach devises and constructs aria forms found in these movements. By drawing upon secondary literatures along with in-depth analysis, I will stress that Bach’s aria forms do not fit in to one, definitive musical form of the early part of eighteenth century. In turn, I will propose that Bach’s aria forms reflect rather nonconventional, individualistic, idiosyncratic practice, thereby separating the composer from his contemporaries.
