본 연구는 한국전통음악의 현대적 창작 중에서도 재즈와의 협업과정을 중심으로 논의한다. 특히 창작에 참여하는 연주자, 작곡가 그리고 청중이 대면하게 되는 문화적 및 사회적 관계를 살펴보기 위하여 극작가 리차드 세크너의 ‘공연이론 (Performance Theory)’을 이용하여 분석한다. ‘공연이론’을 통해 한국전통음악과 재즈의 만남을 음악적 뿐만 아니라 사회적 문맥에서 살펴 보게 된다. 본문에서는 재즈와 한국전통음악의 협업의 예로 본인이 호주 출신 재즈 연주가 사이먼 바커 (Simon Barker)와 함께 진행한 작업 ‘허튼 가락 (Scattering Rhythms)’을 중심으로 접근하였다. ‘공연이론’을 토대로한 분석에 덧붙여 본인의 연주 앨범인 대금 연주곡 ‘님 (2013)’과 영국 BBC 방송국이 제작하는 월드뮤직전문 프로그램 ‘Late Junction’에서 녹음한 시청각적 자료로 덧붙여 새로운 공연예술로서의 거듭나는 한국음악의 미래를 다루어 보고자 한다.
