Abstract

In this study, we tried to verify whether the ratings of General Programming TV, which is controversial for political bias, can affect the political party’s approval ratings. To this end, we conducted a regression analysis and Grandeur causality test based on the ratings of AGB Nielsen’s JTBC newsroom ratings and KBS 9 news ratings along with Democratic Party support ratings and Liberty Korea Party support ratings. Analysis shows that the change in the ratings of the JTBC newsroom has a causal relationship leading to a change in the approval rating of the Liberty Korea Party support ratings. However, there was no causal relationship in the opposite direction. On the other hand, the KBS 9 news rating change was not statistically significant with the change in the Democratic Party’s support ratings. This result suggests that the General Programming TV has a political effect on the viewers and may cause the change of the approval ratings of the political party according to the results of the polls. In addition, it implies that the General Programming TV news can function as a mechanism that affects the change of the support ratings of political parties in regard to the important political issues in our society and elections such as the general election or the presidential election in the future.
