‘문 닫고 나가’: 한국어의 접속어미 ‘-고’에 대한 고찰

This paper investigates the meaning and function of the conjunctive affix -ko in Korean. I show that it carries out three different functions in the expression Mun tat-ko na-ka: (1) parallelizing two conjucts, meaning ‘Close the door and (= &) go out'; (2) connecting concurrent events, meaning ‘Close the door while you go out'; and (3) connecting non-concurrent events, meaning ‘Close the door after you go out.' The problem occurs when this third function is imposed on -ko, because the expression Mun tat-ko na-ka seems to mean ‘Go out after you close the door.' However, Korean speakers have no problem saying and understanding this expression, so I propose to add a new function to -ko following the polysemy approach.
