본 연구는 접속어미 ‘-고’의 통사적 특성과 문맥적 의미를 밝히는 것을 목표로 하였다. 기존 논의에서는 접속어미의 의미를 설정하여 의미 관계에 따른 통사적 제약이 나타난다고 논의하였다. 그러나 문법 기능을 하는 언어 형식인 접속어미 ‘-고’는 기본적으로 동일 구성 성분을 나열하는 기능을 하고 선행 용언에 따라 달리 해석된다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다. 서술어를 중심으로 구성된 사건 구조가 ‘-고’와 결합할 때 선행 사건과 후행 사건의 시간적 겹침(overlap)에 따라 문맥적 의미를 파악할 수 있었다. 선행 사건의 서술어의 상적 특성에 따라 선행 사건의 어휘상이 [+완성성]을 가질 때 계기 혹은 순차 관계, 선행 사건의 어휘상이 [-완성성]을 가질 때 동시 관계로 해석된다는 점을 밝혔다. ‘-고’가 대립의 의미로 파악될 때, 반의관계를 이루는 사건을 인식하는 문맥적 의미임을 살폈다. 대립 관계의 ‘-지만’의 교체 양상을 통해 결합 범위가 넓은 ‘-고’와 결합 범위가 좁은 ‘-지만’이 계층 관계에 있음을 제안하였다. 이러한 제안을 통해 계열 관계를 이루는 접속어미들의 통사적 특성에 따른 계층 구조를 검토할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This paper aims to explain the syntactic characteristics and contextual meaning of the conjunctive ending ‘-ko’ in Korean. Previous studies have shown that the conjunctive ending ‘-ko’ has various meanings and demonstrated syntactic restrictions. However, the conjunctive ending ‘-ko,’ which is the language unit that functions grammatically, links the same constituent, and is interpreted differently depending on the preceding verb. When the event structure constructed around the predicate was combined with ‘-ko’, the contextual meaning could be grasped depending on whether the preceding event and the following event have temporal overlap. This paper proposed that the meaning is interpreted based on aspectual characteristics. When the preceding lexical aspectual features have [+perfective], the sentence is interpreted as the relation of sequentiality, and when the preceding lexical aspectual features have [-perfective], the sentence is interpreted as the relation of simultaneity. This study tried to explain the contextual meaning of the contrastiveness of ‘-ko’ in case the antonym of a lexical item is linked in a sentence. This study also showed that ‘-ko’ is linked more extensionally than ‘-ciman’ through replacing of ‘-ciman’ and ‘-ko’, which shows the paradigmatic relation. This also suggested that ‘-ciman’ is in a hierarchical relation with ‘-ko’. These suggestions allow us to examine the hierarchical structure of conjunctive endings that form paradigmatic relations.
