It is clear that plural–underlying form is an important methodology to explain the case of irregular alternations as a result of historical language change. I also accept the existence of plural–underlying form. However, I criticizes the fact that sufficient consideration of phenomena and clarification of the nature of phenomena should precede prior to the explanation of the plural–underlying form. In order for a plural underlying form to be valid, it must first be proved that the alternation is not a synchronic alternation, and the selection conditions must not disagree with other linguistic facts. And each of underlying forms must be not one of possible underlying forms but underlying form itself. Thus, I critically examines the problems related to the identity of selection conditions and the validity of plural–underlying form.
