초록

After Han Kang’s works gained heightened attention following the Nobel Prize in Literature, discussions have also emerged regarding her occasional use of italics. It is clear that Han Kang’s italics, which appear at the peaks of emotion, are a distinctive stylistic device that contrasts sad realities with poetic sentences that are both poignant and beautiful. This paper will compare the use of italics in Han Kang’s 󰡔소년이 온다󰡕(sonyon-i on-ta)(2022) and Deborah Smith’s Human Acts(2020), discussing the differences and similarities between them and how they should be understood from a text-centered translation perspective. The use of italics in 󰡔소년이 온다󰡕 with its various discursive functions is largely retained in italics and, in some cases, even transferred to the orthography. Based on these concerns, this study focuses on the “italicized to regular” and “regular to italicized” conversions.
