초록

근대로의 이행에 관한 논의는 봉건사회와 같은 전통사회에서 근대 사회의 성립과 정과 경제성장의 동인(動因)에 대한 역사적 탐구의 의미를 지니고 있는 관계로 경 제사와 경제발전론의 분야에서 아직도 관심이 적지 않은 이슈라고 할 수 있다. 한 편 경제사를 역사이론을 중심으로 설명하려고 시도한 마르크스(Karl Marx)와 힉 스(John Hicks)와 같은 경제학자들과 마찬가지로 아담 스미스는 나름대로의 고유 한 경제사이론을 통해 봉건사회에서 근대 자본주의로의 이행과정을 설명한다. 경 제활동과 관련된 사람의 주요한 본성은 이기심인 바, 이러한 본성이 적극적인 생 산활동으로 반영되도록 자극․유인의 환경을 제공하는 것은 국가의 사법적 활동 이며, 농업 및 상업사회 등 사회발전단계에 따라 산업간 경제활동의 상호의존성 이 불가피한 사회에서는 사회적 분업의 고도화가 경제발전의 핵심 요인으로 작용 한다. 스미스의 경제사 이론은 다음처럼 요약 가능하다. 1) 부의 축적과 인간행동 의 특성: 인간은 부의 축적과 관련된 활동영역에서 교환성향과 자애심 (self-regarding propensities)을 가지고 행동한다. 2) 국가와 재산권이론: 국가에 의해 규정․집행되는 재산권제도와 그 구조는 사회 구성원의 유인체계에 심대한 영향을 미친다. 3) 분업이론: 사회적 분업의 확대는 생산력의 증진과 기술진보, 소득상승과 인구증대, 시장규모의 확대 등 확대재생산과 경제진보를 촉진한다. 본 연구는 스미스의 경제사이론이 자본축적 및 경제성장 등과 같은 경제현상의 이면에는 무엇보다도 국가에 의한 재산권 구조의 규정과 사법질서의 안정이 선행 되어야 함을 강조하고 있다는 점과 이 같은 방법론적인 관점에서 노스(Douglas North)의 신제도주의 경제사학의 선구자임을 언급하고자 했다.

Abstract

Smith has a theory of economic history, which may be compared to Karl Marx’s or John Hicks’ historical theory. Smith made an effort to explain the transition from feudalism to capitalism in Europe in terms of the theory of economic history. It assumes that man has a drive to better his own condition, that a nation-wide system of property rights has great influence on economic performance by giving an incentive to work, and that the division of labor and specialization promote economic development by virtue of technological progress and the market expansion. In this paper it is seen that the polity and the economy in Smith’s system of social science is inextricably interlinked in understanding the performance of an economy. And it is also suggested that Smith can be treated as a precursor of Douglas North, who is the founder of the new economic history.
