스미스와 노스는 경제 진보와 퇴보 등 경제의 흥망성쇠를 조명하기 위해 경제사 이론체계를 구성하고 이를 경제사 연구에 적용한다. 본 연구는 경제변화의 역사를 체계적분석적으로 이해하고자 시도한 스미스와 노스의 경제사 이론체계의 특징과 유사점을 비교하고자 한다. 첫째, 역사연구의 기초를 형성하는 방법론적 유사성이다. 경제사의 ‘이론적’ 탐구를 목표로 하고 있으며, 단일이론보다는 시장, 국가 또는 사회영역에 걸쳐 있는 하위이론을 활용한다. 둘째, 사회성에 의해 제한받거나 또는 합리성 측면에서 제한되는 사람들의 이기심은 (비록 최적화는 이룰 수 없지만) 기대이익과 기대비용을 감안하여 행동하도록 유인하는 원천으로 작용하며, 분업과 비개인적 교환(시장)의 확대 등 경제변화를 설명하는 주요 요인이다. 셋째, 국가에 의해 운영되는 적합한 재산권제도가 경제성과의 선행적 기초가 된다는 점에서 국가-시장의 두 영역은 경제사를 이해하는데 분리할 수 없을 정도로 연관성이 크다. 또한 이상적인 소박한 국가론과는 달리 역사적으로 국가는 지대를 추구하거나 비효율적 제도를 유지함으로써 재산권제도의 불안정성을 시현하고 경제발전의 장애물이 되기도 한다. 넷째, 역사이론을 경제사의 구체적 사례에 적용하는 경우에서도 유사한 측면이 발견된다. 로마 붕괴 이후 근대 초까지의 서유럽의 경제사를 개괄적으로 검토하는 부분과 근대 유럽에서 영국과 스페인 (또는 그 식민지)의 성장속도(경로)의 차이를 국가에 의한 재산권제도 운영의 차이로 귀결시키는 부분에서 유사한 설명이 나타난다.
Abstract
Adam Smith's and Douglass North's theories of economic history are designed to account for economic performances over time in history. This paper is intended to examine a body of their theories of the kind respectively, and to find their similarities in methodology and substances from that. We find that both of them use several theories of social sciences such as price theory, state theory, and ideology theory, which exactly correspond to the categories of economy, state and society properly needed to study economic history. Smith's and North's theories of economic history tell us that economic progress or stagnation mainly depends on how well the state may deal with setting up and enforcing efficient property structure. England and Spain in early modern Europe are presented as a good example for them by which to illustrate their theories.
