Abstract

In recent years one of the stylized facts related to economic growth is that income and growth divergences or economic inequalities between advanced and developing countries have been spreading rather than a historical catch-up process. As a result of the debate on this, an approach that focuses not only on key factors internal to the market itself, but also on institutional elements and spatial geography has emerged for what are the fundamental drivers of economic growth. This paper aims to show that Adam Smith’s theories of economic development preside over the modern discussion on economic growth and unequal development while at the same time giving a richer insight than the current approaches entangled in those specific dimensions. In this regard Smith’s theories of economic development are seen to be an endogenous model in his system consisting of multi-layered sub-theories of economic forces in the market, of legal institutions of the state, and of demo-geography. In Smith’s view, economic growth and inequalities depend on these main factors interacting in time and space that play a crucial role in how much production costs, transaction costs, and transport costs are incurred. Based on his multi-layered theories, this paper sheds close light both on the economic history of Western Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire and the first economic take-off in the early modern England in the Wealth of Nations.
