Abstract
This paper investigates the sources of output growth in the Korean economy, both at aggregate and sectoral levels, over the period from 1970 to 2001. The 'growth accounting' results show that productivity growth of the Korean economy, particularly in the manufacturing industry, has accelerated in recent years. But, productivity growth in service industries such as finance, insurance, and real estate, construction, and wholesale and retail trade sectors have been consistently lower. We analyze how the lower productivity growth of stagnant service sectors relative to progressive manufacturing sector drags the overall economic growth.
