Abstract
This paper seeks to examine the growth prospect of Korean economy based on the empirical findings of growth accounting analysis. It asserts that the concern for low total factor productivity(TFP) growth issued from recent studies on East Asian TFP controversy does not foretell pessimistic future since the low TFP growth is a natural phenomenon observable in the early stage of industrialization. The empirical results on the trend of sources of growth show that Korea has rapidly transformed from accumulation to efficiency based growth since mid 1980s. Furthermore, in terms of TFP growth, Korea has enough room to catch up with advanced countries. However, the trends in demographic composition, savings rate, and industrial structure indicate that the rapid growth with aggressive accumulation cannot be sustained anymore. Many structural indices imply the era of rapid growth ended around early 1990s. The real concern related with future growth lies in the rapid fadeaway of environment that worked positively on past growth, which can be observed through stagnation of manufacturing sector's employment, decline of saving rate, and advance of aging society. Thus, Korea's timely adjustment to the rapid change of economic environment is a key to cross the threshold to become a high income country.
