도시공간으로서의 유곽과 샤레본(洒落本)의 세태풍자―『세키후진덴(跖婦人伝)』의 노장(老荘)사상 수용을 중심으로―

Abstract

“Sekihujinden” is a masterpiece of early Sharebon, published during the popularity of Lao-Zhuang philosophy. To convey the story in an easy-to-understand manner, the setting is placed in a red-light district, and the characters are described in detail, including their personalities. The red-light district at that time was a world full of hypocrisy, governed by contradictory rules such as denying the importance of money while being controlled by it, avoiding sexual desire while fulfilling it, and unexpectedly respecting formality while desiring freedom. In this context, Sharebon had a strong playful tone and were characterized by abundant wit, supported by considerable Chinese and Japanese learning. In particular, the author sought to popularize the classical world through the idea and technique of “Mitate,” which involves making people laugh by metaphorically contrasting different meanings and values. At the same time, this technique met the intellectual needs of scholars. The attempts made in “Sekihujinden” provided great inspiration to the subsequent Edo literary world and contributed to the revitalization of Sharebon that dealt with red-light districts and lustful discourse in literary history.
