Abstract
Jean-Baptiste du Halde’s Description, published in Paris in 1735 based on the manuscripts written by twenty seven Jesuit missionaries in China, is a monumental piece of work that represents the Chinese studies conducted by French scholars during the 18th century. It describes the various details of local traditions, institutions, industry and economy of the regions encompassing the mainland China, Manchuria, Mongolia, Xizang, Xinjiang, Korea and Japan. It also contains the translations of original Chinese versions and the discussion of the missionaries’ interests in propagation of Christianity. This paper aims to shed a new light on the missionaries’ understanding of China at the time and discuss a few issues found in their translation of the original Chinese versions though it does not cover all the vastness of the book’s contents. It argues that the missionaries were deeply impressed by the economic prosperity and potentialities of China and displayed their deep interest in the Chinese products and the local fauna and flora. Their explanations seem to reveal not only that they recognized the excellence of Chinese civilization but also that their views were confined by Christian values and incomplete understanding and awareness of history and institutions. In particular, the paper points out that the translations of some Chinese texts found in Description do not seem to reflect the original Chinese meanings, which calls for a detailed analysis of the Chinese original. Despite such weaknesses, Description seems to have deepened the Chinese studies conducted in the 18th century France, especially in their efforts to investigate into particular aspects of China, illustrated by their subsequent studies in Chinese history and institutions that have appeared since the 18th century. The appearance of later translations that correctly reflect the original is one of the influences of Description on the Chinese studies in France. Description also played a key role in extending the realms of French scholars’ study of history itself. However, this paper is limited in its scope since it only deals with a few aspects of Description and leaves many issues for future research, including in-depth discussions on each missionary’s perspectives on China and their different interests in the area as well as on the various contents and contexts of Chinese historical facts included in the book.
