Abstract
This study examines the construction in which the continuative form of i-adjectives combines with the existential verbs aru and iru (e.g., utsukushiku aru “to be beautiful” and utsukushiku iru “to stay beautiful”). It argues that these -ku aru/iru constructions function as compound predicates, where the i-adjective carries the primary meaning, while aru and iru serve grammatical functions. Specifically, this study clarifies that aru is necessary when highlighting an i-adjective and that aru/iru is indispensable for expressing various modalities. Among these, certain modal expressions derived from the volitional nature of iru cannot be expressed with aru. Additionally, it discusses how aru and iru, as verbs, play a role in situating the inherently static nature of adjectives within real-time contexts. This study also points out that temporality, highlighting, and modality are not mutually exclusive but instead function in a complex interplay. Furthermore, it identifies the asymmetry between -ku aru/iru (with i-adjectives) and -de aru/iru (with na-adjectives) as a notable characteristic. In particular, there is a significant difference in the degree of grammaticalization of aru in -ku aru and -de aru. Nevertheless, the study also reveals examples where their formal correspondence is utilized in actual language use. By clarifying the meaning and function of -ku aru/iru, this study provides a comprehensive perspective on the broader category of “adjective + aru/iru,” including na-adjectives.
